The UPSC CSE Selection Process 2025 is conducted in three stages: 

Stage 1. Prelims– The UPSC Prelims Exam 2025 is qualifying in nature. The candidates who clear the prelims exam are eligible for the Mains exam.

UPSC CSE Exam Pattern 2025

The UPSC CSE Exam Pattern 2025 is divided into three stages, Prelims, Mains and Interview. The Prelims exam consists of two objective papers – Paper 1 (GS) and Paper 2 (CSAT) which is qualifying in nature. Qualified candidates appear for the Mains exam, which includes nine descriptive papers, two of which are qualifying. Those who clear the Mains exam are called for Interview. Final selection is based on the combined score of the Mains and Interview.

The UPSC CSE Exam Pattern for Prelims consists of two papers- Paper 1 (GS) consists of 100 questions, 200 marks and a duration of two hours. The cut off is released for Paper 1 to qualify in Paper 1 of Prelims exam. The Paper 2 (CSAT) consists of 80 questions, 200 marks and a duration of two hours. To qualify in Paper 2 a candidate needs to secure 33% marks in Paper 2.

Entry level officers start with a basic pay of Rs 56,100 per month, which can rise to Rs 2,50,000 per month for the position of Cabinet Secretary.
