Mahavir Jayanti 2025 History
Lord Mahavira was born in 540 BCE in Kundagram, Bihar belonged to the Ikshvaku dynasty. His mother was Queen Trishala of Kshatriya caste, and his father was King Siddhartha who was the ruler of the Nata, or Jnatri, clan and used to worship 23rd Tirthankara, Lord Parsvanatha.
He was named as Vardhamana-augmenter as his Father gained prosperity after his birth. He was married to Princess Yashoda and had a daughter with her.
At the age of 30, he left his family and became a monk to eliminate pains, sorrows and suffering. He spent twelve and a half years in no clothes and meditated in silence to work over his desires, feelings, and attachments.
After almost 13 years, he attained enlightenment called kevala gyana in Jainism after two and a half day fasting without water in sun and got the title of the Jina (conqueror). He attained nirvana at the age of 72 in 527 BCE in the town of Pava in modern-day Bihar.
