Mahavir Jayanti 2025 is also referred as Mahaveer Janma Kalyanak which is celebrated as the birth anniversary of Lord Mahavira who was the 24th yet the last ‘Thirthankara’ of Jainism. Lord Mahavira was born in Bihar in 540 BCE to King Siddhartha and Queen Trishala in Kundalagrama. He spent 30 years of his life travelling India to preach the philosophy of Ahimsa (non-violence), Satya (truth), Asteya (non-stealing), Brahmacharya (chastity), and Aparigraha (non-attachment), which later referred as the fundamental principles of Jainism.

According to Drik Panchang, Mahavir Jayanti 2025 will be celebrated on the Trayodashi (13th) of Shukla Paksha in the Chaitra month. The Trayodashi Tithi begins on April 9 at 10:55 PM and ends on April 11 at 1:00 AM. This day marks the birth anniversary of Lord Mahavir which holds a great significance for the Jain community. According to the Jainism beliefs, the day is marked by the signs indicating his spiritual greatness.

Mahavir Jayanti 2025 History

Lord Mahavira was born in 540 BCE in Kundagram, Bihar belonged to the Ikshvaku dynasty. His mother was Queen Trishala of Kshatriya caste, and his father was King Siddhartha who was the ruler of the Nata, or Jnatri, clan and used to worship 23rd Tirthankara, Lord Parsvanatha.

He was named as Vardhamana-augmenter as his Father gained prosperity after his birth. He was married to Princess Yashoda and had a daughter with her.

At the age of 30, he left his family and became a monk to eliminate pains, sorrows and suffering. He spent twelve and a half years in no clothes and meditated in silence to work over his desires, feelings, and attachments.

After almost 13 years, he attained enlightenment called kevala gyana in Jainism after two and a half day fasting without water in sun and got the title of the Jina (conqueror). He attained nirvana at the age of 72 in 527 BCE in the town of Pava in modern-day Bihar.

The Mahaveer Janma Kalyanak holds a great significance from the perspective of society as well as family through sharing rituals and cultural practices while spreading the message of peace and nonviolence. 1. All the Jain Devotees prepare a grand chariot to do Rath Yatra with an idol of Lord Mahavir, sing bhajans (devotional songs) and chant sacred mantras. Jain institutes also have cultural and music performances.
2. The idol of Lord Mahavir then took a ceremonial bath known as Abhisheka with milk, water, and flowers. This signifies purity, devotion, and spiritual cleansing.
3. There are special prayers, sermons, and pujas conducted in Jain temples. Monks and scholars follows and promotes the Jainism give lessons on Lord Mahavir’s teachings.
4. Distributes food, clothes and medicines to the needy community people and makes Animal shelters as a tribute to non-violence which is one of the Lord Mahavir’s principles.
5. Many Jains are seen fasting and silence to strengthen the spiritual side.
